Is Flood Insurance Necessary in Florida?
Posted by at October 6, 2011 in Home Insurance
Wherever you live in the great state of Florida, purchasing a FL flood insurance policy is not only a good idea, it is an absolute necessity. This is because flooding continues to be a risk to almost all homeowners, no matter how safe their area seems to be, and because flooding generally isn’t covered by standard homeowners’ insurance policies.
There are of course a number of ways that a home can ‘flood’. If your home floods after a storm or some other accident or hazard, your home policy may cover a situation where rain coming through the home from above has caused the ‘flooding’, however, water coming in from ground level is unlikely to be covered. This is where your flood insurance comes in.
If you think that your home is safe from flood you might be surprised to know that a high proportion of flooding actually occurs in areas that are deemed low-risk zones. Flooding is hard to predict, and the ever-changing status of our towns and cities means that flood risks change too. New developments, for example, may alter the flood paths of an area, while removing trees and foliage may do the same.
So even if you think that you’re safe, you should contemplate taking out a flood insurance policy before it’s too late.
