guters Best Ways to Prevent your Gutters from BlockingOne of the first things that many homeowners do at the first sight of summer is to clean out blocked gutters. Many simply do not give a thought as to how they can prevent those gutters from becoming blocked to begin with. If you have gutters on your home and you are tired of spending every summertime and possibly fall cleaning them out, there are a few things that you can do to prevent blockage.

  1. There are a number of surface tension systems that fit perfectly over gutters and help to avoid blockage. The water runs over the system and directly into the gutter. The debris however, as in leaves and twigs that can block your gutters, rolls over the tension system and falls to the ground. The water will still fall into the gutter which protects your home from water damage but any debris will be washed away from your gutters. Installing these systems depends on the actual system that you choose. Some are very easy to install while others may take a bit of work. Some fit directly under the edge of your shingles and others attach directly to fascias. They are relatively inexpensive and do a wonderful job of keeping your gutters clear.
  2. Another product that works well is the gutter filler or insert. The inserts are fabricated from a foam material and trap debris as it hits the gutter. The water will wash to the gutter but debris will not be able to get past the insert. These are also relatively inexpensive and very easily installed. Keep in mind that inserts tend to not work as well for homes that are surrounded by trees which generally drop leaves and other debris regularly.
  3. Finally, there are a number of screens that are designed to stop debris from blocking your gutters. These screens come in a variety of materials from stainless steel mesh to others and work well for most homeowners. You can find many plastic screens that work well and are fairly inexpensive. The screens will normally block out all debris although homes that are surrounded by trees could see a slight problem. They are installed easily and come in a myriad of sizes. Smaller screens are the best for blocking all debris and many feel that mesh is the best material. While there are a number of inserts and screens that you can slide into your gutters yourself, many of these require professional installation to ensure that they are put in properly. Make sure that you check to see if installation is possible or if you are required to hire the installation.

Keeping your gutters cleaned out an unblocked will help you to better protect your home from water damage. If you have gutters, and most homes do these days, keeping them clean should be part of your routine home maintenance. You can check into these products for keeping debris out of your gutters or speak with a gutter manufacturer to inquire about gutter systems that will help to stop blockage.
